Obituary for Arlene A. Kreis
Arlene A. Kreis, age 90, passed away Thursday, January 26, 2017, at The Masonic Care Community in Utica, New York. She was born and raised in Fredericksburg, Pennsylvania on November 28, 1926, and was the daughter of the late James Otis Sherman and Annie Melinda (Boyer) Sherman. A 1944 graduate of Fredericksburg High School, she attended Lebanon Business School, and worked for the Lebanon Paper Box Company. After marrying on September 4, 1948, she began a long career in childcare, as she and Charles had 10 children. Interspersed in that long career, they moved to West Winfield and later to Richfield Springs, New York. She was active as a Cub Scout Den Mother, Library Assistant at the Richfield Springs Public Library, and a Caregiver. Arlene held a variety of positions at the Church of Christ Uniting, and was a member of the Church Choir for many years, some of which were under the Direction of her husband, Charles, in NY, and later in Myerstown, PA, after their retirement in 1990. Among her many hobbies, such as reading and gardening, she enjoyed the many symphony concerts and dance band outings performed by her musician husband Charles.
She is survived by her brother, James Sherman and sister-in-law Kathy of Chapel Hill, NC, sister-in-law, Olive Kreis of Tremont, PA, and daughters: Sherry Kreis of Denver, CO, Deborah Kreis of Sanford, ME, Linda, wife of Douglas Ames, of Fruitland Park, FL, Carol Simpson of Richfield Springs, NY; a daughter-in-law, Mariesa Kreis, widow of Gregory Kreis, of Saratoga Springs, NY, and sons: Charles E., husband of Annie Kreis, of Rockport, MA, Brian, husband of Gladys Kreis, of Schenectady, NY, H. Jeffrey of Stony Point, NY, Karl Kreis of Knoxville, TN, and Kevin, husband of Debbie Kreis, of Latham, NY. In addition to her children, Arlene was blessed with 23 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, a son, Gregory, and brothers, Donald and Arthur Sherman.
A memorial service will be held at the Church of Christ Uniting, in Richfield Springs, NY, in the spring at a time to be determined by the family. Interment will be at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Church of Christ Uniting, PO Box 896, Richfield Springs, NY 13439. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, January 31st from 2-3 p.m. at the Grose Funeral Home, 358 West Washington Avenue, Myerstown, Pennsylvania.
